Why Rural Schools Matter by Mara Casey Tieken
October 2021 - February 2022
Facilitated by Derek Sturgill and Jeff Taylor

Through collaborative discussions and prompts, participants will engage in a monthly online book study of rural schools based upon lived experiences from two diverse southern towns.  Aligned to OCTM's mission, vision, and core values and principles, the study will provide participants opportunities to grow as mathematics educators by reflecting on diversity and equity in both the rural districts portrayed in the reading, and in their own classroom and community.  Moreover, this study examines the kinds of research used to illuminate rural issues, which may inspire teachers to ask questions about their own practice and seek answers.

Find out more about the book at this link.  Each participant should obtain the book on their own.

The virtual book study will begin on Tuesday, October 26, 2021 at 7:00 p.m. and will continue on the last Tuesday of each month through February (December date to be determined).  Participants can earn up to 10 contact hours.  See the monthly plan for the study here.

This book study is FREE for all OCTM members.  If you are not already a member, click here to join.
